‘Adopsi Linux Banyak Hambatan’

Jakarta, Windows selama ini menjadi alternatif pilihan sistem operasi yang lebih kuat ketimbang Linux. Seolah ingin membalikkan telapak tangan, sebuah grup distributor Linux mencoba menggabungkan sekumpulan standar komponen untuk Linux desktop.

Standar ini dibuat oleh Free Standards Group (FSG), untuk mempermudah para developer membuat aplikasi yang akan dijalankan di Linux dari distributor yang berbeda. Linux, di pasar dekstop, pangsa pasarnya masih kecil sekali. Linux sendiri mempunyai ‘landasan’ sebagai sistem operasi untuk server, populer untuk situs hosting. Anggota FSG termasuk IBM, Sun Microsystems, Dell dan Red Hat.

Di Linux, untuk melakukan tugas-tugas tertentu, banyak software yang perlu ditambahkan seperti halnya graphical user interface (GUI). Sayangnya, tambahan library software berbeda antara distributor Linux, sehingga membuatnya sulit untuk mengetahui apakah aplikasi semacam word processor bisa berjalan pada sebagian komputer Linux.

“Salah satu hal besar yang sulit dilakukan adalah konsistensi. Dan Windows memiliki kekuatan itu,” papar Jim Zemlin, Executive Director Free Standards Group (FSG).

“Jika Anda membeli program Windows, Anda tahu bahwa program ini akan berjalan di komputer Windows. Dan Linux juga perlu seperti itu,” imbuh Zemlin lagi, seperti dikutip detikINET dari AP Selasa (25/4/2006).

Zemlin juga menambahkan, perlu adanya tingkatan standardisasi jika menginginkan teknologi bisa dipakai dan diadopsi secara luas. FSG sebelumnya pernah membuat server yang sudah disertifikasi, yang disesuaikan dengan Linux Standard Base (LSB). Versi LSB 3.1 disinyalir akan base sistem Linux pertama yang akan dimasukkan ke standar distribusi desktop.

Jelang 1 Mei mendatang, Xandros Inc. juga akan mengapalkan distribusi dekstop pertama yang sudah disertifikasi. Disusul distribusi dari Novell, Red Hat, Debian Project, Ubuntu dan yang lainnya.

Perlu Kompabilitas

Ada dua GUI yang populer di Linux yakni KDE dan GNOME. Dan LSB tidak memilih keduanya, namun menekankan pada kompabilitas pada level sistem yang lebih rendah. Menurut FSG, hal ini memungkinkan developer mengembangkan sebuah aplikasi yang bisa berjalan pada sistem sesuai user interface yang diinstal.

Michael Jang, author of “Linux Annoyances for Geeks, mengatakan masih banyak hambatan yang dihadapi dalam menyebarkan adopsi Linux. Jang menilai masih belum jelas apakah developer akan membuat versi Linux untuk semua aplikasi yang dibutuhkan konsumen.

Sebagai contoh, software tax preparation. Software ini berubah setiap tahun dan ini tidak tersedia untuk Linux meski situs tax preparation menyediakan alternatif pengisian yang tidak rumit.

Selain itu, hampir semua manufaktur komputer menginstal Windows sebagai sistem operasi default. Dan hanya sedikit yang menawarkan akan memasang Linux. “Proses instalasinya mungkin memang mudah, tapi masih merupakan momok bagi orang banyak,” tukas Jang. (dwn)
